This morning, former Health Secretary Alan Milburn released a stark warning: one in six young people in the UK will not be in education, employment or training (NEET) within the next five years unless urgent action is taken.

The numbers are sobering:

  • 1.25 million 16–24-year-olds projected to be NEET by 2031
  • 16.2% youth unemployment — the highest rate since 2014
  • A generation Milburn describes as caught in a "hopeless catch-22": employers want experience, but no one is offering the first chance to build it.

Why the Old Playbook Stopped Working

For decades, the script was simple: get good grades, go to university, get a graduate scheme. That script is breaking — not because education stopped mattering, but because the gap between what classrooms teach and what employers buy has widened faster than curricula can adapt.

1. AI is eating entry-level work. Junior roles in admin, copywriting, basic coding and customer service are being automated or compressed. The young people who'll be fine in 2031 aren't the ones with the best grades. They're the ones who started building visible, recognised, employer-respected evidence of capability before they were 18.

The Skills That Actually Move the Needle
